1 Thing You Need To Be Able To Do To Start Freelancing

You need to be able show you can do the job.

It is a simple as that. If you can't do the job, you are going to have a rough time freelancing. Starting to freelance before you are ready is going to make it a 100x harder.

I learned this the hard way by trying to freelance immediately after a web design class with no other experience.

Clients don't want to hire someone they need to teach.

You can get a day job in an entry or junior level role. When clients are looking for freelancers, they aren't looking for someone they need to train. Every client I've worked with expected me to hit the ground running

Many freelancers that have trouble getting their first client have issues from not being able to show they know how to do the job.

Use a day job or your own projects to prove you can do the job.

If you have existing projects or samples of work, use those to show you can do the job. If you don't have any existing work, consider starting off with a day job or complete several projects for yourself as if you were a client.

It is slower to try to get clients without examples of work than it is to get experience first before trying to freelance.

Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way and you can save yourself time and stress by not repeating my mistakes.
